University of Cardiff RIBA Part II MArch Course

The second interview for my Part II study in September 2015 was at the University of Cardiff.

What caught my eye about the Welsh School is its emphasis on low carbon building design and a passion for creating a built environment that won't destroy the planet. I've developed a keen interest in sustainable and innovative design and always looking to learn more.

The course is unique since it comprises an approved period of education in practice which consists of at least nine months’ employment in an architectural practice. Students undertake study and design modules and will make a number of return visits to the School for short courses. Students find their own places in employment, but have some help from the Univeristy.

Dr Andrew Roberts, Director of Education and Students whose research largely focuses on the practice of teaching architecture. Research looks at how teachers of architecture can help students to develop the necessary abilities to become creative practitioners in their own right.

Jakob Peter Theodor Hotz, a registered Swiss architect, member or both RIBA and ARB, and fellow lecturer with interests in design, technology and making architecture within the built environment

I was interviewed by them both within the historical Bute Building. Prior to this, both had seen my portfolio samples as seen from this website, so this interview was more about my design prowess from an academic perspective. Feedback was positive and highly constructive, which really made me think about where I need to improve during my RIBA Part II study, whether it would be at Cardiff or Birmingham.

I was also offered a position on the course, which is a high honour that I'll be ever grateful for.

Whilst I was still waiting on other responses to other applications, I was already sure that my decision would either be with Cardiff or Birmingham, but I would need as much time as I can be afforded to be sure I've made the correct choice.
