Reflection on Pop Culture - Thranduil's Throne from "The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug"

The throne in question...

YouTube videos:

"THE WOODLAND REALM - The Throne and The Palace of Thranduil (DOS BTS)"

"Thranduil Behind The Scenes - Thranduil's Throne"

I watched these YouTube videos and found it intriguing into how much the architectural and sculpting detail was comprehended to creating the throne, which in itself promotes the character who uses it. The design incorporates sacred architectural references from real life churches and cathedrals. Those references are combined with the fantasy landscapes described by JRR Tolkien in the books.

The throne itself is elevated above the rest of the ground, which gives Thranduil a sense of power when confronted with others.

"Thranduil - Elvenking of Mirkwood" as played by Lee Pace in "The Hobbit" film trilogy and was deemed to be the greatest of the Elf kings.

Thranduil's appearance can be described as elegant and sharp boasting silks as well as a horned crown, which is to reflect the stag that is seen to be a sacred animal that is associated with the "other world" and following said stag would be deemed dangerous as described in the video. It thus creates an impression of Thranduil that he must not be crossed.

For me, as a individual still learning about how architecture can create a sense of belonging and power, this has been enlightening for when an opportunity arises to create an environment for someone to feel safe and in control. Cultural references can also add to the effect in a similar way to what has been established here.
