Ecobuild 2014 Exhibition at Excel in London - Shigeru Ban Conference

The Shigeru Ban Conference What an exciting day this turned out to be! Not only was it an honour to sit in the conference of Shigeru Ban himself as he spoke of his disaster relief work, but also his key projects in which he incorporated his Paper Architecture Style. Some other interesting facts came up which I noted;

  • He started his practice without any work experience. This just goes to show you that no matter how much experience you have or don't have, anybody can be successful if you persevere and work hard to get to where you want to me. Shigeru Ban now has firms in not only Tokyo in Japan, but also Paris in France and New York City in USA.

  • After winning a design competition for the Centre Pompidou Metz in Lorraine, France, he set up a temporary office there. This was due to renting a space elsewhere locally was too expensive at the time.

  • In relation to earthquakes: "People die not because of the earthquakes themselves, but by the buildings collapsing." This was one of his reasons for commencing his Paper Architecture investigations. After all, cardboard tubing for instance is lightweight as well as durable. For partitions, he uses 55mm diameter cardboard tubes and for structural aspects, 120mm diameter cardboard tubes.
