Iris Forest - Rehabilitation and Reuse: Office Building Project

A renovation of the existing office buildings on Sumner Street next to the Tate Modern gallery for the digital department of Iris Media. Comprehending their unique work ethos of  team effort and bringing the community in to share and experience the space, the building contains a spa, gym, restaurant, rentable office spaces for new business as well as a club and overnight accommodation for overseas clients to demonstrate Iris' hospitality on the top level complete with a private green roof, and an exhibition space on the ground floor.

Benjo Tokoro - Toilet, Information and Relaxation Centre

Translated from Japanese as "Toilet Place", this is a minor design project of Year 1 at Ravensbourne College. The unit aimed to introduce the skills and knowledge necessary for the production of a freestanding building and the imperatives which drive their creation and use.

It looks at the relationship between interiority and architecture (between the qualities of an interior space and the externalised form of the building) as a site for enquiry and to demonstrate an understanding of the interrelationship of buildings, use, users, site, urban infrastructure and context.

The materiality reflects the surroundings and also creates references to the design inspirations of Japanese Buddhist architectural designer, Kenzo Tange. Furthermore, the materiality is environmentally sound. With the trees and the positioning of the photovoltaic cells on the glass roof above, these allow the creations of various abstract shaped lights that creates an artistic mood to this place, whch allows those that use this facility to feel calmer and less intimidated by the dominant presence of the concrete.

When night falls, to reflect the vivid colours that are on show along the entire riverside Brutalist buildings, the Corian Elements of the design light up in a rainbow of colour.
The light intensity created centrally transforms the dynamic of the facility to reflect the more majestic traditions by creating a sense of sanctuary. The illuminated ramps create aisles to strengthen this relationship to those traditions.

Villa Underground - Tri Use Environment
Flexible Restaurant Gallery Music Venue

This unit looks at issues which arise from the multiple inhabitation of a single building. This involves identification of the specific user groups and their needs and understanding of how they will interact. The manipulation and reorganisation of the space to satisfy contradictory needs leads to understanding that spatial design often involves space design which have both implied and potential uses.

Jamie Oliver plans to open a new Fifteen restaurant on this site, dedicated to his new group of apprentice chefs, which will be aimed at a similar market with a food offer consistent with Jamie's reputation (a modern eclectic European menu mainly based around Italian and Mediterranean dishes).

Jamie wants to incorporate additional gallery space(s) to provide spaces to exhibit two-dimensional work including paintings, prints and photographs.  This will be in form of changing exhibitions of specific artists' work rather than a mixed commercial hanging.

While consideration should be given to exhibiting three-dimensional work this need not be a primary requirement of the space. The Gallery will focus on the work of up and coming local creative talent, rather than the work of established artists.

RSA Recharging Stations Project

First Project of Year 3 at Ravensbourne College. This was entered to RSA Awards 2012.
The brief was to re-conceive or find a new purpose for non-operational and increasingly obsolete car service stations by capitalising on their unique design features.

My response incorporates sustainability features as a means of recycling energy, reducing the facility’s carbon footprint and also generating its own fuel. The concrete from the former petrol station is reused in the new facility structure. The form relates to landscaping, breaking away from the tradition of the linear and blocky petrol station. Standard procedures requires the soil to be excavated, which means incentive to create landscaping. This has a lot more of an elegant look and a different kind of car journey on the site.

It is a place for cars to recharge and for drivers to revive themselves whilst they wait. People have several purposes for driving that are physically and psychologically draining. The colour green socially represents nature, health, well being. This in itself encourages the car driver to feel a lot more comfortable. The landscaping allows for privacy as well as a sound barrier. The facility encourages the idea of having its own realm. This is another psychological benefit for the user as it can be seen as a getaway location. Whilst waiting for cars to charge, they can relax, eat, pay for fuel, roam the area freely as well as maintain their car.

De-Light (Environmental Factors Lighting Project)

First Project of Year 2 at Ravensbourne College. This was entered to:

  • Koizumi Lighting Competition 2011

  • The Lighting Association Design Competition 2011

  • Lamp Lighting Solutions Awards Competition 2011

The brief was to design a unique lighting product as a means of engendering feelings or emotions within a use context. It needed to be explained through a comprehensive and graphically engaging presentation.

The LSS (Light, Shape & Shade) Pods are flexible in their use. Its design is based on traditional modern Christmas tree lights, but the idea is taken to a whole new level. It can be lit as one single pod, or an entire series of pods, depending on the environment that needs to be lit. As for the emission of light, the pods, which are made from HDPE, have a unique and curvy shape that allows for not only an exhibition of unique shapes of light, but also colour and shadow too. It can be used inside or outside in a small room or a larger environment.

Fashion Retail Project

Deploy is a demi-couture brand that specialises in sustainable and innovative ways of thinking about fashion. The brief was to design a new concept for a flagship store for the brand on Floral Street in Covent Garden with a dual function benefiting the surrounding community. My interpretation incorporated new digital technologies to ease the purchase transaction for the user, whilst allowing for a digital simulation of the surrounding environment to allow the user to be more confident that the purchase will complement the venue that the garment will be worn for. The dual function is and art and photography workshop that allows the homeless and/or unemployed to learn a trade and to get involved with the demi couture brand as a head start...
